A geriatrician, a doctor who specializes in aging, says there’s one thing her healthiest patients in their 70s, 80s, and 90s all have in common. She told The Today Show it’s not a specific diet or workout, but rather an approach to life. She says seniors need to avoid getting too comfortable if they want to age healthier.

She’s not saying you can’t enjoy a comfortable bed or couch, but that you need to continue to challenge your body and mind as you age, even if your body is starting to slow down. She tells her patients to keep pushing themselves physically, cognitively, and socially. The idea is that exposing the body to low amounts of stress can strengthen cells.

The news report suggests seniors start with something simple like trying a new low-impact strength training routine or learning a new artistic skill. The point is to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

One final recommendation from the geriatrician is to try to have fun.
