Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health–American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study has found a link between exercise and the cost of healthcare for seniors, according to Kiplinger.com.

The study was published in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine and looked at the correlation between Medicare claims and levels of physical activity. Believe it or not, researchers found that people with a moderate level of physical activity spent $1,200 less in healthcare costs than adults who were not consistently active over the course of their lives.

And even if you waited until later in life to start an exercise program, there’s still good news. Seniors in that group still spent $824 less than those who were not active.

Save Money and Save Your Health

In addition to lower medical bills, there are plenty of other ways that a regular fitness routine can have a positive effect on your life. To name a few, exercise is beneficial for cardiovascular and mental health, it can help you maintain a healthy weight, and it can even help slow down the aging of your brain.

It doesn’t matter what type of exercise you prefer. Just get up, get moving, and be safe!
