The Keys to Moving More When the Weather Won’t Cooperate

It’s been a cold, snowy and icy winter for much of the country. And springtime rain showers are just around the corner. The weather doesn’t need to prevent you from keeping up your exercise routine.

For many seniors, walking is their preferred form of physical activity. It’s heart-healthy and low-impact. In addition to its fitness benefits, walking also provides a mental health boost. HuffPost put together some tips on how to get your steps in even when the weather won’t cooperate. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Go shopping – The grocery store and shopping centers are great places to walk around in a climate-controlled environment. Many malls open early so mall walkers can do their laps before the stores open to customers.
  2. Head to the hallways – Walk all the halls in your house or building. It might be a bit boring doing loops but in a pinch it’s a good way to stay inside and still get your steps in. If you’re able to climb stairs you can add that to your indoor workout.
  3. Put on your dancing shoes – Dancing is a great way to sneak in some steps. This might also be a good form of exercise to try if you don’t like walking or the gym.

If you do decide to brave the weather to walk outside, be sure to dress appropriately and watch out for slippery snow or ice patches and puddles so you don’t fall.
