Soccer — or futbol, depending upon where you live — was in the spotlight this summer thanks to the FIFA World Cup. It has generated a renewed interest in the sport, especially among former players.
An article by Phys.org says all this attention has sparked interest in walking soccer. In this league, players must walk, not run, and excessive physical contact is prohibited, making it ideal for seniors.
Researchers from Cardiff University talked to players and determined that walking soccer is a safe, sociable, and inclusive physical activity. Many said walking soccer allowed them to once again participate in a sport they loved — and it helped them stay physically fit and socially active as they aged, with some players well into their 80s.
Walking soccer is an ideal sport for seniors. Because there is no physical contact, the risk of injury is very small. Players say it’s not as much about physicality and speed but rather positioning and intelligence. It’s about creating “space and finding the right pass at the right time.”
Players also enjoy the social aspect of the game. As it is a team sport, walking soccer promotes camaraderie and friendship.
