Experts warn that everyday habits could accelerate aging and take a toll on your eye health.

According to Fox News, if you’re not careful, you could be harming your eyesight if you are making any of these mistakes:

Not protecting eyes from the sun – Long-term ultraviolet exposure may contribute to macular degeneration and the progression of cataracts. The professor of ophthalmology interviewed for the report recommends wearing sunglasses in bright, sunny conditions to help protect the eyes, including the lens and retina.

Reading in poor light – Older adults may have more difficulty adjusting to darker environments. Poor lighting can increase eye strain and make it harder to focus.

Not eating a healthy diet – A nutritious diet may protect eye health by reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, both of which can affect vision. Additionally, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can worsen diabetic eye disease.

Not staying hydrated – Dry eye becomes increasingly common with age. This is when a lack of tear production and oil secretion causes red, itchy, irritated eyes. The condition can be exacerbated by lifestyle factors like dehydration.

Getting poor sleep – Aging can impact your sleep, with many seniors suffering from sleep apnea. The doctor explains that not only can this cause increased eye pressure, but also lead to higher rates of glaucoma and certain vascular eye conditions.
