Exercise is important, especially as we age. Studies show staying active is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. However, getting to the gym is not always easy, especially in the winter when the temperatures drop and the roads can be covered in snow.
Fortunately, as the Cleveland Jewish News reports, a home workout is a good option. In fact, experts say “exercising at home is equally as great as doing so at a gym or fitness center.”
Often, a few simple pieces of equipment like dumbbells, stretch bands or resistance tubes are all that’s needed to get started working out at home. And if you don’t have equipment, don’t worry — you can use a couple of cans of vegetables in place of dumbbells.
Some senior-safe exercises don’t need any props at all. For instance, the article suggests the doing the “Sit and Stand,” which is basically sitting in a chair and then standing up. “They’re very similar to squats and work all the muscles necessary with walking.”
Exercise videos are another option to help older adults keep fit. There are plenty of free programs and classes available online on YouTube or through apps. Plus, some personal trainers will work with clients via Zoom.
A few words of caution before beginning any workout regimen. Always check with your doctor to make sure it’s okay, especially if you suffer from any physical or cardiac ailments or arthritis.
And make sure your home workout space is safe with no hidden hazards, such as area rugs that you could slide on or trip over.
