During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was tough for some seniors to maintain a regular exercise routine, especially due to social distancing and being cooped up in the house. A recent article in the Washington Post consulted a team of experts who advise seniors to get moving again now that the world is back up and running. Without regular physical activity, seniors are more prone to anxiety, muscle weakness and frailty, and social isolation.

The experts interviewed for the article offered some tips for how seniors can ease back into a fitness routine after being sedentary during the pandemic.

  • Some of the top tips offered include:
  • Consult your physician before starting to exercise
  • Have your physical ability and function assessed
  • Work with a physical therapist if you need help easing back in
  • Start with slower activities and then build your routine upon them
  • Stay active and consistent with your exercise regimen
  • Make sure your nutrition is up to par and eat fresh, whole foods

Don’t Be Hard on Yourself

It doesn’t really matter what age you are, as everyone falls off the exercise bandwagon from time to time. While more seniors were less active during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s possible to get out of the habit of working out no matter what the state of the world is.

By starting up a fitness routine and once again adhering to an active lifestyle, you’ll feel better physically and mentally, plus, you’ll have a great excuse to get out of the house and get moving.
